Helpful Search Tips

Use these tips to help find what you are looking for in the archive.

When you put words into more than one box, the search looks for items that match all of those words.

• Keyword: Searches ALL written text, including titles and description.
  • Make sure your words are spelled correctly.
  • Searching for more than one word finds items with all those words (for example: framed canvas finds items with both words).
  • Use a * at the end of a word to find different endings. Searching paint* will find paint, painter, and painting.
• Title: Searches all titles. Try Untitled for example.
• People and Organisations: Search objects related to artists, makers and organisations in our database.
• Year: Type a single year or two years with a dash to search a period of time (example: 1996-1998).
• Reference Number: Type an item's exact reference number (like PAW_W0001) to go straight to it.
